Resignation of Sir Menzies Campbell1.40.00pm GMT Tue 16th Oct 2007
Commenting on the resignation yesterday evening of Sir Menzies Campbell as Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Stephen Williams said: "I am sorry that Ming has taken this decision. He has given the party a period of stability and sound management after the forced resignation of Charles Kennedy. However, now that we know the next general election is not until at least May 2009, I think he was right to take the personal decision to step down now and allow a new leader to build support for the party in the years ahead." There is plenty of talent in the parliamentary party, and I am sure the election for our new Leader will enable the candidates to showcase their talents." When asked who he would be supporting in the upcoming leadership election, Stephen Williams added: "I will be meeting potential candidates during the week and will make up my mind who to support when I have spoken to all of them."
