Stephen Williams MP has this morning launched a climate change petition, calling on the Government to increase the target for reducing carbon dioxide emissions to 80% in the upcoming Climate Change Bill.

The petition calls on the Government to "introduce a target for the reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions by at least 80% of 1990 levels by 2050, to include in this target emissions from aviation and shipping, and to require intermediate annual targets for the reduction of emissions."

Stephen Williams commented, "If we are serious about tackling climate change, the Government needs to take strong and affirmative action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. An ambitious target to reduce emissions by 80% would be a positive step in the right direction."

"It is also important that we have intermediate annual targets, to ensure that today's politicians cannot delay taking action to achieve this reduction."
