STUDENT GRANTS PAID TO PRISONERS ARE MADNESS - WILLIAMS

Stephen Williams MP

Responding to today's admission from the Government that prisoners taking courses in jail have been paid loans and grants usually given to help students pay for food and rent, Liberal Democrat Shadow Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary, Stephen Williams said:

"The extent of this blunder beggars belief.

"Ministers have now discovered that they've paid out more in student grants than they first thought, but to fewer criminals.

"What are students on the breadline meant to think when the money meant to support them is being paid to serving criminals?

"Helping prisoners learn new skills is vital but it's crazy to give them student grants for food and rent when they're being looked after at Her Majesty's pleasure."
