Stephen Williams MP - working hard for Bristol West

Stephen Williams' views on the replacement of Trident

The issue of nuclear non-proliferation is a long standing interest of mine. If we are to even begin to establish peace and long term security around the world we must work towards the eventual elimination of nuclear arms.

The Government have not yet made clear their long term intentions for Britain's nuclear weapons capability once Trident reaches the end of its useful life. My party will also have to formulate its response. But as you rightly highlight there needs to be an open debate on the subject. My personal position is that Britain does not need to be a member of the nuclear club and we should not replace or upgrade Trident.

I have signed Early Day Motion 129, which welcomes 'our unequivocal undertaking to accomplish the elimination of nuclear arsenals,' and calls upon the Government to abandon any to build a successor to the existing Trident nuclear missile and also EDM 2575 asking the Government to publish a range of options concerning the future of nuclear weapons in this country.
